Loving and Losing: A Familiar Grief

I know that grief well. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of loving five incredible Chow Chows. Each one brought their own magic—some were silly, some wise, all unforgettable.

And when each one crossed over the rainbow bridge, the silence they left behind was deafening. It never gets easier. The pain of losing a beloved pet is as deep and complex as any human loss. Because love, in its truest form, doesn't care about species.

A Special Request: From Memory to Magic

Not long ago, a gentleman visited my studio, Enchanted Storybooks and Portraits, with a heavy heart. He had recently said goodbye to his Yorkshire Terrier, Yogi—a small dog with a big spirit. He had since welcomed a new puppy, Munson, into his life, but the grief was still tender.

He wanted to surprise his wife with a gift that honored Yogi’s memory and celebrated the joy of Munson. He gave me a few photos and told me, “I trust you—create what you feel is right.”

Creating the Story: A Pet Memorial Portrait with Wings

As I looked through the photographs, an image came to mind so vividly: Yogi, free and full of life, running with soft angel wings beside Munson. It was never requested—but it felt right.

The piece began with those photos, and through digital compositing and hand-painting, I transformed them into a story. I combined realism with imagination—because that’s what memories are. A little of what was, and a little of what we still carry with us.

When my client saw the finished artwork, he paused and said it made him feel “happy and sad at the same time.” When his wife saw it, she cried.

That’s when I knew the painting had done its job.
